Is It Safe To Travel To Mexico?

There has been a lot of discussion about is it safe to travel to Mexico recently due to multiple reports (which appears to be a witch hunt) by one journalist in Milwaukee, WI. Do bad things happen to tourists in Mexico? Unfortunately they do, and in every city around the globe bad things can happen. Google crime statistics for any major city near you.

I am a frequent visitor to Mexico, and it remains one of my favorite places to travel. The number of incidents that have been cited are small in comparison to the number of visitors to Mexico yearly. 170 incidents were reported dating back to 2009; in 2016 a total number of 35 million people visited Mexico. Do the math, these numbers do not support the media frenzy that has occurred recently.

My clients who have traveled to Mexico and recently returned had nothing but good things to say about their trip. A recent client who was honeymooning in Riviera Maya had this to say; “thanks so much for checking in. Everything is so amazing.” Many people in Mexico rely on tourism to support themselves and provide for their families; so the resorts and staff are focused on providing the best possible experience for their guests.

When travelling to Mexico, you should take precautions just as you would anywhere else.

  • Be aware of your surroundings
  • Don’t go off alone late at night
  • Avoid unpopulated areas
  • Don’t over indulge on alcohol
  • Avoid recreational drugs (they are illegal in Mexico)

I always recommend purchasing travel insurance, and find an experienced travel agent that you trust to work with.
